"Sit down and close your eyes. Ben. Don’t open them till I tell you to.”
“OK. My eyes are closed.” What are you up to now Nana?”
She walked into the room and stood before him. “Keep your eyes closed. No peeking,” she reminded him.
“OK. OK. Hurry up.”
“I sort of lied to you when I told you I was embarrassed to go back to the hairdressers.”
“I knew that Nana. Nothing embarrasses you. So, where were you?”
“Your granddad told me, through Stella, that I needed to be my true self, so I went somewhere today and did something to show the world who I really want to be. I need to thank you too because it was something you said that inspired me.”
“Oh crap. What have you done Nana? Is Mum going to kill us both?”
“Most likely,” she said cheerfully. “OK. You can open your eyes now.”
So begins Beverley Daniels’ new life without her beloved husband.
